Three fire engines from Penrith, Carlisle East and Lazonby stations attended the M6 motorways northbound carriageway between junctions 41 and 42.
Fire crews were called at 11:16am today, Monday 20 May.
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The fire, involving a car on the hard shoulder, was extinguished using two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, a thermal imaging camera and compressed air foam.
“Fire crews were in attendance for approximately one hour.”
Two lanes of the M6 northbound were closed while emergency services dealt with the scene.
