A MAN accused of raping a stranger in Carlisle has insisted: “I didn’t have sex with her.”
Joseph Mjemer, 36, denies two charges which allege that he raped a woman at a flat on the morning of New Year’s Day this year.
Police were alerted after the female reported waking to find she’d been “assaulted, sexually, by someone I don’t know”.
Mjemer is on trial at Carlisle Crown Court where this afternoon (THURS) jurors were read interviews he gave to police following his arrest on January 2.
He told detectives he had met the woman at a city centre bus stop in the early hours, and went back to theĀ flat with her after she invited him. Both were “tipsy”, he said, adding: “She knew what she was doing 100 million per cent, and did not need assistance walking.”
After leaving her in the flat for several hours, Mjemer returned and – cold and fully clothed – he climbed into bed with her to warm up after he said she’d stated:Ā “It’sĀ all right”.
But he said he’d got out within minutes, gathered his belongings and left the address before returning to his Elizabeth Street home in Glasgow by coach.
“I didn’t have sex with her,” he insisted to police. In response to the allegations, he said: “I don’t know what kind of motive this person has got.”
The trial continues.
