Carlisle man charged with GBH

Officers investigating a serious assault near Carlisle city centre have charged a man overnight.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “Robert Lawless, 20, of Oakland Drive, Carlisle has been charged with grievous bodily harm.

“Lawless is due to appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on the 10th June.”

An investigation was launched after officers were called to Robert Street, which leads from Crown Street, off Botchergate, by the North West Ambulance Service at 4.54am on 8 June.

A 55-year-old man, from Carlisle, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital.

He is currently at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle still in a critical condition.
