Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service launches recruitment drive for apprentice firefighters

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is recruiting four firefighter apprentices to be based countywide.

CFRS is seeking people who want to work within their community to improve safety awareness, help protect the public and promote fire safety.

Applications open on Monday 10 June and will close on Sunday 7 July. You can find out more and apply online at cumbria.gov.uk/JoinCFRS.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over and will undergo a rigorous selection process, including physical fitness tests. Successful candidates then undertake an intensive 14-week training programme starting in January 2020.

CFRS has a strong track record of success for our firefighter apprenticeship programme in recent years, with an overwhelming majority of our apprentices going on to careers as full-time firefighters.

Our apprentices receive full training in the role of a professional firefighter and after successfully completing this training they then work alongside firefighter crews throughout the county.

You can find out more about the job role and fitness requirements at one of our presentation and practice evenings:

  • Monday 24 June, 6pm-8pm – Kendal Fire Station
  • Wednesday 26 June, 6pm-8pm – Barrow Fire Station
  • Monday 1 July, 6.30pm-8.30pm – Carlisle East Community Fire Station
  • Wednesday 3 July, 6pm-8pm – Workington Fire Station

CFRS Station Manager Roger Exley said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to join Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service as an apprentice and receive full training and support to become a professional firefighter. We are fully committed to our apprenticeship programme and offer a career path that can often lead to a permanent full-time firefighter role. I would encourage anyone interested to come along to one of our taster events at fire stations throughout the county.”

Applications must be made via the county council’s website at cumbria.gov.uk. Applications for operational firefighter apprenticeships close on Sunday 7 July.

If you have any questions or you would like an informal discussion about the apprenticeship opportunities, please contact: Roger Exley, Station Manager, tel: 07917 305763 or email [email protected]
