Fundraiser completes year long challenge

During May a local woman celebrated her 40th Birthday and the end of a year long fundraising challenge in aid of Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and Prostate Cancer UK. However, she now has one final fundraising challenge to complete.

In May 2018 Georgie McRoberts started her fundraising adventure to complete 40 challenges before she turned 40.  When Georgie hit her original £2k target she vowed that if she could double this to £4k she would add a head shave to the challenges and on the very last day of the challenge she exceeded the £4k mark.

On Friday 14 June at the Fantails, in Wetheral, Georgie will complete her final challenge by taking part in a sponsored head shave. Georgie will not be alone in undertaking the challenge as she will be joined by Maggie Edgar who will also shave her head.

Speaking in May 2018 before the challenge Georgie explained, “40 is a milestone and the idea of completing a series of challenges whilst helping amazing charities in the run up to it helps me to focus my energy into the challenges and doesn’t me time to dwell on hitting the big 40! The huge added bonus has been how much interest and support my challenges haver garnered so far which will hopefully help Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and Prostate Cancer UK and draw attention to the great work carried out by all three.

Speaking after the challenge Georgie explained, “It has been a long, but very rewarding year. I have met some truly inspirational people and have had amazing support from, friends, family, strangers and local businesses and most importantly I have doubled the original target. I am dreading the head shave as it was a flippant comment when I never dreamed I would reach the £4k mark. Numerous people have told me I have done enough, but I feel I need to follow through with the challenge and it will hopefully raise some more cash and awareness for the charities I am supporting.

“If anyone would like to come along to the event it is open to all and will be held at 7.30/8pm in Fantails.”

Since starting the fundraising challenge in 2018 Georgie has completed a range of fundraising challenges, including covering 4,000 miles on foot in the year (11.5 miles day in day out and over 8 million steps), a 40 hour fast, 7 marathons in 7 days, a marathon in a foreign city, visiting a new city, skinny dipping, sky diving and conquering her fear of heights on a via ferrata.

Katrina Sander, Community and Events Fundraising Manager, said: “Georgie has done an amazing job in raising a fantastic amount of money in aid of Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and Prostate Cancer UK. The money raised in aid of the hospice will help us to provide the highest standards of care, support and activities to local people with life limiting illnesses.

“On behalf of everyone here at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw we would like to say a huge thank you to Georgie, she should be incredibly proud of her fundraising.”
