The campaign to save maternity services at West Cumberland Hospital has been praised in Parliament by the Prime Minister.

Trudy Harrison this afternoon asked Theresa May to join her in “commending the hard work and dedication of the staff at West Cumberland Hospital, the North Cumbria Trust the Working Together Group and my fantastic community for their innovation and commitment”.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions, the Copeland MP added: “Together with the addition of over £100million of investment from this Conservative government, this means that consultant-led maternity will be staying open for future generations.”

The Prime Minister paid tribute to Mrs Harrison for campaigning on behalf of her constituents.

And, she said: “We welcome the Clinical Commissioning Group’s decision to retain those consultant-led services in West Cumbria.

“Better Births established that personalised care means safer care and greater choice should be made available to women accessing maternity services. They should be allowed to make decisions about the support they need during birth and where they prefer to give birth. I think that this is a good decision that has been taken.”
