Award-winning stand-up comic and actor Dave Johns is bringing his brand new comedy show, From Byker to the Baftas, to Theatre by the Lake’s Main House on Sunday 25 August. Described by The Guardian as ‘hilarious and emotional… one of the unlikeliest, most uplifting stories you will ever hear’, the show charts his extraordinary life and career, and is delivered with his trademark charm and twinkle.
Johns is one of the most respected and best loved comedians working on the British comedy circuit. An avuncular Geordie with plenty to say, he’s performed extensively in venues, clubs and festivals in the UK and worldwide for over 30 years, and is a popular guest on television comedy shows including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, 8 Out of Ten Cats and The Football’s On.
2016 saw Johns play the lead role in Ken Loach’s critically acclaimed and multi award winning film I, Daniel Blake which won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA for the Outstanding British Film. As Daniel, Dave received glowing reviews and numerous award nominations, winning BAFTA for Best Actor, Dublin Film Critics Award for Best Actor, Empire Magazine Best Male Newcomer and Seattle Film Festival Best Actor.
His career also includes many performances at the Edinburgh Fringe as well as appearing alongside Christian Slater in the celebrated West End production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
Johns is also a talented improviser, making regular guest appearances with one of the longest running and highly acclaimed comedy improvisation teams, The Comedy Store Players in London’s West End.
