New Fit 4 All sessions launch in Appleby

Shap Fit 4 All

FITNESS sessions aimed at keeping older people active have been launched in Appleby.

The new Fit 4 All classes run each Friday afternoon at The Hub, between 1.15pm and 3.15pm, offering a range of gentle activities designed to help people become more active in a friendly, sociable setting.

Set up and funded by the Leisure and Communities Team of Eden District Council with GLL as a provider, the popular Fit 4 All sessions are already running at Kirkoswald Church Institute each Tuesday afternoon from 1.45pm to 3.45pm and at Shap Memorial Hall each Wednesday morning between 9.45am and 11.45am.

Sally Hemsley, Communities Officer at Eden District Council said: ”Whilst the activity side of the sessions is really important in helping to improve health and wellbeing in later years, equally as important is the social side of things – the chance to chat over a cup of tea and to get together with friends old and new. This helps to reduce rural and social isolation.”

The Fit 4 All sessions are led by a friendly activity facilitator and are informal, allowing people to take part in as much or as little as they like, whilst helping to increase levels of physical activity to help improve health and well-being.

The range of activities on offer includes warm up, gentle exercise, badminton, indoor bowls, seated exercise, table tennis, dance, boccia, walking and board games. The activities are specifically tailored to those attending each session.

Extra grant funding for the Fit 4 All sessions in Eden has come through a successful funding application to Sport England and Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE), who are running a pilot project called LACEUP which promotes cost effective physical activity, engagement in sport and healthy lifestyles in rural communities; getting inactive people to become more active.

The LACEUP grant has been secured with the help of ACT (Action with Communities in Cumbria) who are the local partner for the grant.

There is a small charge of £3 per session and the sessions currently run up until the end of March 2020. There is no need to sign up for all the sessions, just come along to the sessions that are convenient.
