Essential work to replace a large Kendal water main which has burst several times will get under way next week (Monday November 4).
Engineers working for United Utilities need to replace 800 metres of 15 inch diameter pipe running from outside Murley Moss Business Village in Oxenholme Road, northwards along the A65 Burton Road up to the junction with Natland Road.
The first section will involve the use of 3-way traffic lights at the junction of Oxenholme Road and Murley Moss Business Village from Monday November 4 for up to three weeks.
The work will then move northwards in short sections using traffic lights as required.
In total the work is expected to last 15 weeks, although it will be suspended for several weeks on December 18 to allow the free flow of traffic in the run-up to Christmas, resuming again on January 6.
Christian Wheeler of United Utilities said the vital work would improve the reliability and resilience of water supplies in Kendal.
“This is an important water main which has suffered a number of leaks in recent months and we need to replace it. Unfortunately we have no option but to use traffic lights so our engineers can work safely. We realise it will be an inconvenience, but doing this work now means there will be less disruption in the long term because it will be a brand new piece of pipe.
“While we’re there, we’ll do everything we can to keep traffic moving and do the work efficiently, including manning traffic lights during the day and working extra hours at weekends when we can.”
More information will be provided as work progresses.
