It has been announced today that Stephen Eames, current chief executive at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, will take on a new leadership role locally in light of the progress that has been made to join up health services in north Cumbria.
Since it was announced in May 2018 that north Cumbria was one of 14 national Integrated Care Systems, there has been a lot of progress made to provide more joined up care for the benefit of our local communities. This includes the successful merger of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust and Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to become North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) on 1 October and the transfer of mental health and learning disability services to specialist providers.
As well as his role as chief executive of the Trust, Stephen Eames is also currently the lead for the North Cumbria Integrated Care System. Stephen’s role will now shift focus to become the executive lead for the system work in order to ensure this continues to progress at pace for the benefit of our local communities. Appointing a new chief executive for NCIC will provide a clear focus on driving the new organisation forward as both a great place to receive care and a great place to work.
Stephen will work very closely with the new chief executive in his new role which will provide independent leadership for the health system in north Cumbria and allow Stephen to focus on driving the ambitions of the NHS forward locally, including:
Improving health – building care around our communities
Improving care – development of pathways and services, continuous quality improvement and joining up the work of the NHS with other partners
Sustainability – financial sustainability and building our workforce for the future
North Cumbria is one of the first areas to introduce a role of this nature which is ensuring the region is at the forefront of national developments in the NHS. Stephen is also undertaking a similar role in Humber Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership which provides the opportunity for shared learning and expertise.
Commenting on his new appointment, Stephen said: “I am extremely proud of the progress we have made since I joined the NHS in Cumbria in January 2016 and I remain very committed to working in Cumbria. I am looking forward to continuing to work with our fantastic teams in my new role as well as working with the new chief executive when they are appointed.
“Over the past year we have made some vital changes to how we deliver services in Cumbria which are already benefitting our local communities and our staff including the introduction of Integrated Care Communities and the merger of the two provider trusts. It is important that this work now makes further progression which I will oversee in my new position. In the meantime, I will remain as chief executive at NCIC until an appointment is made.”
