A public consultation is underway on the proposal to designate Brisco and Wreay as conservation areas.
Both Carlisle areas have been assessed by Carlisle City Council and are well-preserved rural villages whose qualities could be safeguarded further by designation.
The potential of each village for designation as separate conservation areas is proposed, subject to the outcome of public consultation.
Wreay and Brisco are two very well-preserved Cumbrian rural villages. Wreay in particular is noted for its number of listed buildings including the Grade II* St Mary’s Church, designed and built by Sarah Losh in 1842. Brisco is rooted in farming origins, with several well-preserved farmsteads still present.
The public is being asked for their views on the proposed designation, the boundary options, issues in the area and ideas for improvement.
Cllr Paul Nedved, Portfolio holder for Economy, Enterprise and Housing, said: “We want to hear what local residents think of the proposed conservation designations. Please take this opportunity to take part in the consultation and give your views.”
The Local Planning Authority has a duty under Section 69 (2) of the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 to periodically review its area to determine whether further parts of it should be designated as conservation areas.
Conservation Areas are defined as “Areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance” by Section 69 of the above Act. There are 19 Conservation Areas in the District designated between 1968 (Wood Street and Victoria Road) and 1997 (Stanwix).
The public consultation will take place for eight weeks between Monday 11 November 2019 and Monday 6 January 2020 with a public consultation event to be confirmed soon.
