A man has been arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery at a shop in Workington town centre this afternoon (9 January).
The incident happened at around 12.20pm inside the Risino Bros shop on Jane Street when a man was reported to have entered the shop carrying a wood axe.
The suspect is described as a white man, around 5ft 6ins tall, of stocky build, wearing a dark-coloured hoody, a balaclava and possibly carrying a white bag.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “A 41-year-old man from Workington was arrested shortly after on suspicion of attempted robbery. He is currently detained in custody.
“No one was hurt in the incident.”
Searches are still ongoing and police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Police on 101, quoting log 86 of the 9th January.
