A CARLISLE woman who threw a bottle which hit a fellow city clubber in the face, leaving her bleeding and injured, has been given a suspended jail term.
Trouble flared in the Outrageous bar, English Street, just after midnight on September 21, 2018. Bethany Johnstone was on a dance floor with friends when one member of another group barged into them, causing her to push back.
A member of that other group, 25-year-old Jade Marie Haughan, then poured a drink from a glass bottle over Miss Johnstone’s forearm. As Miss Johnstone pushed her and remonstrated, the situation “deteriorated”, Carlisle Crown Court heard.
Haughan had to be held back and, as people shouted, Miss Johnstone couldn’t hear what was being said so she laughed. “The next minute, the defendant threw the bottle she had been holding at Bethany Johnstone,” said prosecutor Wayne Jackson. “It caught her on the upper lip causing an unpleasant injury which bled quite a lot.”
The bottle did not smash and Haughan, who’d been only a short distance away at the time, fled to the rear of the club. She was traced after the victim – who received hospital treatment – carried out Facebook research. Haughan, of Brookside, Carlisle, was later identified by witnesses. She initially denied wrongdoing, but later admitted assaulting Miss Johnstone, causing her actual bodily harm.
Said to be the sole carer of two young children and a woman of previous good character, Haughan was sentenced today (WED).
Judge Peter Davies suspended an eight-month jail term for two years. Haughan must complete a four-month electronically monitored night-time curfew, and a rehabilitation activity requirement.
