A piece of Barrow’s history, unearthed during construction work on one of the town’s newest buildings, has been preserved for posterity.
A coke hopper, thought to have been in use in a foundry dating from the 1900s, was unearthed by contractors working for BAE Systems. Weighing a tonne, it was found buried 5 metres below the ground as work on the new Central Yard development was carried out.
The hopper was recovered, cleaned, blasted and painted and is now on display in the newly opened facility.
