From the makers of the well-received The Marriage of Kim K, self-identified millennial producers leo&hyde are warmly welcomed back to Theatre by the Lake’s Studio on Tuesday 25 February at 7.30pm.
GUY: A New Musical is Queer as Folk meets Bridget Jones with a catfishing electronic musical twist, giving audiences catchy pop anthems woven into a heartfelt story about modern dating. The Reviews Hub called it an: ‘irresistible rom-com of the highest order.’
Guy is a gay millennial looking for love… Guy is fat, nerdy and shy… Guy feels like he doesn’t fit in to the gay community. But when a rejection on Grindr pushes Guy to make terrible life choices, he is forced to confront his inner demons, all the while pushing away everyone close to him.
After winning Best New Writing (Buxton Fringe) and Best Show (Birmingham Fest), this millennial odyssey through prejudice, hook ups, and beauty standards is a much-needed reminder that the only person you can be is yourself in the age of online dating and social media obsessions.
Like The Marriage of Kim K, the music was written by Penrith-born composer Stephen Hyde. Hyde studied at Manchester’s Chetham’s School of Music (where he was awarded the composition prize), won a choral scholarship to University of Oxford, and was shortlisted for the 2018 Cameron Macintosh composer residency. The Stage said: ‘Hyde’s idiosyncratic techno-pop score is excellent… haunting ballads are effortlessly fused with original pop anthems to create a genuinely contemporary score that’s rich in detail and intricate in its rhythms.’
leo&hyde are a multi-award-winning Manchester-based musical theatre company, which uses sound worlds and stories about modern culture to portray depth in the seemingly shallow and the relatability of the seemingly pretentious – all with wit, spectacle, and affection.
