During February CFM Radio ran a competition on air to find out what was the most popular fitness class in Cumbria and South West Scotland, and Seascale based Shameem Arnold’s MokyFit won the top slot with the highest votes. ‘I am thrilled and would like to thank everyone who voted for us.’ said Shameem. This year Shameem and her husband Mat are celebrating 10 years of MOKY business.
MokyFit comprises of the original MokyFit dance workout launched 10 years ago but now also includes the very popular, MokyHIIT a fun combat style class, MokyZest to cater for older adults and those wanting a gentler but effective workout and MokyCore (mat based workout) as well as MokyKidz and MokyTots. All these workouts have a common theme, infectious music, party atmosphere and amazing instruction.
After hearing about the competition on CFM Radio Tracy Reid who attends Shameem’s classes put a post on facebook “I’ve just voted for Shameem on CFM website. No prizes involved but she definitely deserves to be the most fabulous fitness place in Cumbria!”
The votes started pouring in and people attending Mokyfit classes across the county voted in their droves.
Shameem creates all the choreogaphy which is delivered to Moky Instructors nationwide – “We have instructors as far North as Cyldebank in Scotland and as far South as Lowestoft.” Shameem herself runs classes Monday to Friday in Whitehaven, Seascale and Egremont. The classes are extremely popular, and people even travel several miles to attend.
Helen Atkinson who lives in Maryport said: “I travel from Maryport to Seascale to attend Shameem’s classes which is a 50-mile round trip but it’s so worth it. Shameem really knows how to look after us, not just in physical fitness but mental too and the classes have been a God send helping me through a difficult time.”
However, it’s not always been an easy road for Shameem, 12 years ago, Shameem suffered with headaches, insomnia and extreme fatigue and then received the devastating news that she had M.E.
She fought her way back through stoic determination to get fit and not allow the M.E to win. ‘It was dance and exercise that got me back into shape. I understand the real value of exercise and how it creates a positive effect on well-being, and I wanted to share this with others.’
Then in 2013 Shameem gave birth to twin boys. The pregnancy and subsequent care of her boys resulted in her being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and having two back surgeries. The second in May 2018 “I was leaning over the bath washing the boys when the disc finally gave way. It was excruciating pain which resulted in losing the feeling in my left leg from the knee down.”
Shameem underwent emergency surgery but nearly two years on has not been able to fully regain the feeling in one foot. “Despite my injury I am still able to exercise, although it’s certainly more challenging now. However, I don’t let it stop me doing something I love and know is good for me, plus I have a lot of very loyal customers who rely on me that I would never want to let down”. Shameem is living proof that exercise really can heal and make us stronger, and through her own experiences she understands how a good cardiovascular workout improves mental health. It’s no surprise her classes are so popular and have been voted No 1 in Cumbria.
By the way, MOKY stands for the Magic of Keeping Young, we could all want some of that!
