A pensioner from Scotby near Carlisle has pleaded guilty to a shop theft, 82-year-old Mr Lord Ethan Stewart admitted the offence when he appeared at North and West Cumbria Magistrates Court today (TUES).
Pam Ward prosecuting informed District Judge Gerald Chalk how the defendant entered the B&M Bargains store on Wigton Road in the city on December 1 last year.
He was observed over the stores CCTV cameras placing items in a trolley and going to the cashiers till and paying for some items, but left the store without paying for other goods, he was then seen driving away from the car park, the car’s registration number was noted and given to police.
Officers traced him to his address at Hill Head, Scotby, he admitted the theft of two, Morphy Richards soup makers and a packet of Jacobs crackers, the judge was told Stewart was going through a stressful time and is on medication which affects his thought process, this was an impulsive moment.
Stewart was fined £130, court costs of £85 and a victims surcharge of £32 and has to pay the store £84 in compensation.
