Members of staff at the Tesco store on Rosehill, Warwick Road in Carlisle became concerned when a female customer was attempting to buy alcohol.
Magistrates in Carlisle were told Lesley Ann Hardie, 55 from Stoneywath Cottages, Cotehill near Carlisle went into the store on March 2nd.
A member of staff noticed Hardie had a set of car keys in her hand, she was unsteady and stumbling around, she told staff she wasn’t driving and that her husband was in the car.
A staff member watched as she got into the drivers seat of a silver Peugeot car, police were notified and given the registration number, when they [police officers] arrived at her door she answered and admitted she had driven the car on the Tesco car park and home, she gave a breath sample reading of 69-microgrammes of alcohol in 100-ml of breath, almost twice the legal limit of 35mg.
The court was told she did not realise she was over the limit, she had drank a bottle of gin at around 3am that day, she pleaded guilty to drink-driving and apologised for her actions.
Hardie was disqualified from the roads for the next 40-months fined £134 with court costs of £117, the court was told she is giving up driving in any event.
