Police and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service are investigating a fire at a residential garage in the Newby West area of Carlisle which occurred at around 4:40am today (May 24).
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “Wigton Road was closed for a short time and a local evacuation of properties took place, the road has since reopened and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.”
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 4:27am three fire engines from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and Wigton attended reports of a fire at Garden village Newby West.
“On arrival crews found a garage attached to a domestic property to be well alight.
“Crews extinguished the fire using six breathing apparatus, two hose reels, a triple extension ladder and one main jet.
“Crews were in attendance for approximately five hours.”
