Police were called by the North West Ambulance Service at 7.35pm on July 15 to a report of concern for the welfare of a woman at a property at Clayton Avenue, Cleator Moor.
The woman, 43, was taken by ambulance to the West Cumberland Hospital where she was in a critical condition. She died last night.
The death is being treated as suspicious at this time.
Two men, aged 61 and 44, both of west Cumbria, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody today.
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Smith said: “We can confirm that two men are in custody following the death of a woman.
“Residents may notice a larger than normal police presence in the area as inquiries are carried out.”
