Students congratulated on their resilience and success ahead of A-Level results day

Mike Smith OBE

With hundreds of students across the county set to receive their A-Level results on Thursday 13 August, Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership’s People, Employment and Skills Strategy Group (PESSG) wishes to congratulate Cumbria’s young people on their achievement, in what has been an incredibly challenging time due to COVID-19.

Because of the cancellation of exams and the decision to award calculated grades, the grades the students are receiving are the result of the national standardisation of centre-assessed grades.

Crucially, these exam results are the key to a student’s next steps, and schools across the county are working together with partners to support students in reaching their anticipated destinations in September.

Mike Smith OBE, Cumbria LEP Board Member and Chair of its People, Employment and Skills Strategy Group, said: “It is more important than ever this year that the focus should be on those students who have coped remarkably well in unprecedented times and we congratulate them on their resilience and success.

“We would also like to thank school leaders and teachers who have remained committed to their students and remained highly diligent and professional throughout the school shutdown.

“The high quality, responsive skills system across Cumbria is ready to support our young people to the next step in their learning and career journey, whether that be Higher Education, Further Education, Apprenticeships or employment.

“The last few months have been extremely challenging but our students have risen to this challenge to secure results that will lead them to their future careers.”

On Results Day, some young people may not receive the grades that they hoped for, while others may still be unsure about their next steps. As well as consulting with the individuals’ school and following UCAS guidance, the following services and resources may help those individuals to think about their future and make sure that they have all of the tools that they need to make the right decisions.

Inspira has Careers Advice For School Leavers and offers appointments with experienced advisers. On Results Day, their Barrow, Carlisle and Workington advisers will be available to make an appointment with, and they will be going Live on Facebook to provide guidance.
