COMPLAINTS are growing regarding the state of a Penrith town centre street.
The rubbish heap outside a property on Hunter Lane “resembles something from a country in the Third World” said one resident.
The heap of rubbish has not just appeared, fed up residents say it has been there for weeks and various bodies such as Eden District Council have been notified, all to no avail.
Enquiries reveal that the property closest to the pile of rubbish, is believed owned by Eden Housing Association, underwent refurbishment because of a change of tenancy.
It is alleged that the contractor carrying out the refurbishment dumped the rubbish and failed to remove it after completing the work inside the property.
A local resident who asked not to be named said: “Apparently Eden Housing Association has also been contacted.
“Hunter Lane is part of the Coast-to-Coast Cycle Route and therefore the rubbish is likely to be seen by cyclists who will clearly not be impressed.
“Never mind the fact that the authorities have been notified, I cannot believe that some of our Councillors have not seen this mess and put a plan in action to remove it. They wouldn’t tolerate it in their own neighbourhood. Something needs to be done now.”
An Eden Housing Association spokesman said: “EHA have recently been made aware of an issue with rubbish in the Hunter Lane area and we are now working with partners to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”
Cumbria Crack contacted Eden District Council however they declined to comment.
The Eden District Council website says: “We treat fly-tipping very seriously. We will look to investigate and prosecute anyone caught fly-tipping waste. We will organise for the removal of fly-tipping from public land.”
